Project Overview

Sometimes a single structural change can completely redefine a space. By removing and framing in the existing garage door, we were able to completely reimagine this kitchen's layout. This key change allowed us to add significantly more custom cabinets, including uppers that reach all the way to the ceiling for maximum storage, and create expansive new countertop space. The result is a bright, highly functional kitchen that makes everyday cooking and prep a breeze.

Issues With The Old Layout

  • Poor lighting layout with only one ceiling fixture, resulting in a dim workspace
  • Separating parquet flooring in the kitchen and dining room that collected dust and dirt
  • An outdated wood-burning fireplace located between the kitchen and living room
  • Minimal countertop space and poor cabinet storage due to an inefficient layout
  • Inconvenient dual-bowl kitchen sink that made washing large dishes difficult

Our Solutions

  • Installed 4-inch can lights throughout the ceiling for bright, even workspace lighting
  • Removed the old parquet and installed easy-to-clean 7.25-inch engineered white oak hardwood
  • Modernized the fireplace by painting the brick white, wrapping the shelf with tile with 45-degree mitered corners, and installing a new gas unit with a custom glass door
  • Framed in the old garage door to relocate the refrigerator, creating much more usable prep space
  • Replaced the old sink with a spacious 30-inch undermount single bowl kitchen sink

Materials Used

  • Two-tone DX8 cabinetry: wood tone bases and white uppers with horizontally opening doors
  • 3cm quartz countertops featuring white and blue veining
  • 3x8 tile backsplash installed in a modern straight set pattern
  • Stainless steel KitchenAid appliances and a 30-inch undermount single bowl sink
  • 7.25-inch engineered white oak hardwood flooring

Project Timeline

1. Client Consultation

We met with the clients to discuss their frustrations with the dim lighting, separating parquet floors, lack of counter space, and the outdated wood-burning fireplace.

2. Design & Layout Restructuring

Our team developed a plan to frame in the garage door to relocate the refrigerator, thereby dramatically increasing the usable countertop and prep areas.

3. Demolition & Prep

We removed the failing parquet flooring and old cabinetry, and began framing work to alter the layout and prepare the fireplace for its modern facelift.

4. Fireplace & Flooring Installation

We installed the 7.25-inch engineered white oak floors. Concurrently, we painted the fireplace brick, wrapped the shelf in custom-mitered tile, and installed the new gas unit.

5. Cabinets & Countertops

We fitted the stunning two-tone DX8 cabinets and laid the 3cm white and blue veined quartz countertops, perfectly complemented by a straight-set 3x8 tile backsplash.

6. Lighting & Finishing Touches

We completed the electrical work with new 4-inch can lights and installed the 30-inch single bowl sink and stainless steel KitchenAid appliances to finalize the beautiful new space.
